Fishery Monitoring Advisory Committee SUBGROUP
May 15, 2019: 1:30pm – 4:00pm (or as necessary)
Teleconference number: 907 271 2896
Expected Outcomes from this meeting:
- Recommendations for the FMAC regarding cost savings and increased coverage
- Recommendations for the FMAC regarding other items as necessary
TASK from the Council: continue to flesh out ideas related to how to best integrate the different monitoring tools, such as dockside monitoring, EM, and monitoring cooperatives to meet overall monitoring objectives as recommended by the FMAC in their April 2019 report.
Questions to explore include:
a) Could shoreside monitoring be used to support catch accounting for fixed gear discards (e.g., average weights)?
b) In terms of biological information for stock assessments, what data would/could shoreside sampling provide and what would be missing from significantly reducing the observer coverage at-sea?
c) What is the cost of shifting to shoreside biological sampling and where would the money come from?
